LEGISLATIVE/POLICY COMMITTEE

This committee originated in the 1990’s to provide APA direction during the creation of TEA-21, and SAFETEA-LU. National APA has a Legislative & Policy Committee (LPC) established by the Board of Directors, and the TPD Legislative/Policy Committee exists to provide support to APA staff, the national LPC, and the APA Policy Advisory Committee with transportation experts. This is an informal, ad-hoc group, but we will seek out specific opportunities to use this resource. Activities will likely include offering our assistance in the form of writing white papers, policy guides and perhaps most importantly providing APA with assistance and guidance as we respond as an organization to legislation.

There are several key transportation issues that may need our members:

  • Surface Transportation Reauthorization: We are currently looking for TPD members to help National APA digest the various reauthorization bills, if interested please contact Daniel Haake, AICP, Vice-Chair for Policy
  • Complete Streets Legislation
  • Freight Legislation
  • State of Repair Legislation
  • Transportation and Aging Populations
  • Planning for a More Mobile Population initiative: Some of the sub-texts of this effort include Demographic Shifts, Shrinking Communities, Shifts within Regions, and mobility caused by Climate and Nature. If you’re interested please contact Daniel Haake, AICP, Vice-Chair for Policy
  • If you have an interest in serving on the Planners' Advisory Council, all you need to do is submit an e-mail request to Daniel Haake, AICP, Vice-Chair for Policy, and state your topic area(s) and a way for us to get in touch with you. Any experience in your area of interest is fine - we are not looking exclusively for senior level contributions, sometimes the best ideas come from those with the freshest perspective.
